Did you know that there are multiple types of solar energy panels? They each have their methods of creating energy, and one of them utilizes the heat from the sun to heat water, which is then used to generate electricity. Cool right? Today we’re going to talk about something even cooler — solar panels that turn sunlight directly into energy. These types of solar panels are called photovoltaic solar panels.
These work great with geothermal heat pumps because they rely on some electricity, although far less than traditional A/C systems. Here’s what you need to know about them and how they can work for you & with your geothermal system!
How Photovoltaic Solar Energy Capture Works
Photovoltaic panels are installed on the roof of your home, where they convert sunlight directly into electrical energy. A DC to AC inverter converts the DC power generated by the panels so that the electricity can be used to power your home’s appliances. The excess electricity can be stored in batteries or directly injected back into the local utility grid (also known as a “grid-tied” system.)
While battery storage used to be the de-facto method of electricity storage, grid-tied systems are rising in popularity because of the cost to purchase and maintain a large battery system to service the electrical needs of your home dropping. With a grid-tied system, you can either reduce your power bills to zero or, in some cases, your local utility board will even pay you for the excess power you generate.
Geothermal Heat Pumps and Photovoltaic Panels
Geothermal heat pumps are a fantastic addition to the installation of photovoltaic panels. The reason for this is that they are such efficient systems. You see, solar panels are great, but they suffer from the issue that when it is cloudy outside, they don’t collect very much energy.
Not surprisingly, a lot of the energy your home uses comes from your climate control system. If that system needs 1/4 the power that an average system needs every watt of electricity your panels collect go much further.
